I will think that there's a few ways to understand the culture of Vietnam, but i recommend these few:

(1) Stay in Vietnam for a long period of time. Going there on short trips will take you a very long time to understand the place and people well. Even if you stay in Vietnam, u have to mix with the locals and go to places where they go. To understand more, a minimum of a few years is required.

(2) Read some books on the history and culture of Vietnam. It may help quite a bit, but still lacking in real life understanding.

(3) marry a vietnamese spouse and take a lifetime to understand. Most Singaporeans marry their viet spouses in Singapore, so it will take a long time for them to truely understand Vietnamese culture. But if communication is no problem, its always good to ask your spouse to explain certain aspect of their culture to you.
